Our Queerstory “when the Ambassador visits us….”

Today is the 17th of April 2013 and is definitely not just an ordinary day for us in Arus Pelangi. Today, for the first time in our queerstory, an Ambassador visits our office. Yes, it true! Her Excellency Corinne BREUZÉ, the newly appointed Ambassador of France for Indonesia was here! Even her black fancy diplomatic vehicle with the French and Indonesian flags on it, somehow, managed to squeeze through the little ally in front of our office – creating quiet a scene for our neighbors, passerby walkers and motorbike riders. Wow, it was quiet something right?

During the meeting that was also attended by Q-munity, we shared a lot of stories on our works in LGBT rights advocacy since 2006, where LGBT community have grown from nothing into something, and continue to grow stronger everyday. Homophobic community, discriminatory laws, and general ignorance of public and public servants towards our existence, are amongst main challenges that we continuously face on daily basis, in our endless battle towards recognition. It was also interesting to learn that the French embassies all around the world were requested by the French Government to support national LGBT movements.  Continue reading

Criminal Code revision deemed a threat to personal liberties

Ina Parlina, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | National | Fri, April 12 2013, 8:50 AM

A coalition of religious freedom activists, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights activists, and human rights and judiciary watchdogs has rejected the current draft of the Criminal Code bill as it could further restrict personal liberties.

The coalition, the National Alliance for Criminal Code Reform, said that the Criminal Code bill had confused morality and human decency with legal norms.

The draft would threaten basic civil rights rather than protect them, the alliance said. Continue reading

The 5th ILGA Asia Conference 2013, “The Phoenix Rising” | Konferensi Ke-5 ILGA Asia 2013, “Bangkitnya si Burung Api Feniks” | The Palazzo Hotel, 29-31 Maret 2013, Bangkok, Thailand

The Rising PhoenixDalam mitologi mesir kuno, burung Feniks atau biasa disebut The Phoenix merupakan simbol keabadian.

Statement from the ASEAN LGBTIQ Caucus

We, the ASEAN LGBTIQ Caucus[1] are outraged and disappointed by the forthcoming decision of the ASEAN Head of States to adopt the AHRD that intentionally excludes sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI). Despite countless attempts and demands by the members of civil society, including LGBTIQ groups, to push for its inclusion, ASEAN have remained reticent to the attempts. This AHRD not only shows a lack of respect to LGBTIQ people but also makes a mockery of the international human rights values and principles that all nations and citizens abide by and are held accountable to. Homophobia on the rise, survey says

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Headlines | Mon, October 22 2012, 10:33

Press Release

[Manila, 13 September 2012] – Number of burning issues related to ASEAN Human Rights Declaration (AHRD) that posted by the representative of civil society organizations from ASEAN region received cold feedbacks from the ASEAN Inter-governmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) during the Second Regional Consultation with Civil Society in Bellevue Hotel, Manila, The Philippines, yesterday, (12/9).

Celebrity gossip shows denigrate homosexuality, but at least they talk about it

Sunday, 29 July 2012 00:00
Bram Hendrawan

‘The shocking confession of Yupiter Fourtisimo about his deviant sexual behaviour is still fresh in the public memory. Now, another celebrity is thought to suffer too from such sexual deviance. This case is even more surprising because that celebrity is Evan Sanders, a handsome man with an athletic body, a macho man. And it comes despite his recent statement that he just found the girl of his dreams.’

This breathless statement opened a news item on the television infotainment program Hot Shot, broadcast by SCTV on 14 March 2008. It’s typical of the way in which homosexuality has become a regular topic to spice up these shows, breaking old taboos – but in ways designed to titillate and scandalise the audience.
